Ants can be attracted to any beehive as it provides a food source, and although they are a nuisance, they usually won’t cause a problem for your bees.

To deter them from being attracted to your hive, make sure you clean up any spilt honey with warm water after harvesting.

Remove the honey trough cap and, if necessary, clean the leak-back gap with a thin tool such as a kitchen skewer or wire to allow the honey to drain back into the hive.

Cinnamon powder can be applied behind the window covers to deter the ants.

If your hive is on a stand, you can place the legs in water to prevent ants climbing onto the hive. Clear away any foliage that ants may use as a bridge to access the hive.

The Flow Hive 2+ includes a hive stand with Flow ant guards™.

If you have a Flow Hive 2, there are now Flow ant guards™ available to purchase here.
